I regularly use Google Maps<\/strong> and Google Earth<\/strong> in my preparation for a site visit. Its sometimes the only real details I have of a workplace before I arrive, particularly when it is on a large site. Street View<\/strong> compliments that at the ground\u00a0level.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was\u00a0intrigued\u00a0to see that Google is now starting to\u00a0digitise\u00a0monuments in Iraq with the Google Art Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wouldn’t it be great to preview a workplace quickly before\u00a0visiting. It would save a lot of time and even allow a crude virtual \u00a0walk though survey anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0technology\u00a0already exists to do this in real time\u00a0using\u00a0a person wearing a camera to telemeter images and sounds to a person sitting in an office, with the office professional directing the person on the ground where to go and point. Well done, it could be 90% of the solution and much quicker. Video overlay is a fairly well established tool in occupational\u00a0hygiene\u00a0to allow the presentation of monitoring\u00a0instrument\u00a0data on to of the video and as a data stream. The real limitations are communications bandwidth and latency.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0developed\u00a0a six channel Video Exposure Monitoring<\/strong> (VEM) system that would also telemeter\u00a0physiological\u00a0measurements for heat stress, when I was doing work with people wearing protective clothing on high voltage power lines in summer. A lot of fun occupational\u00a0hygiene\u00a0toys are just around the corner.<\/span><\/p>\n
