US Olympic Face Masks

These images of US track cyclists arriving in Beijing were posted by the NY Times.

It appears that the masks do not have exhaust valves like I predicted, but should be crushable and fold for putting in a pocket. I suspect that the face seal, particularly next to the nose is not that good. The mesh is something that Mouldex had on their masks decades ago, so it may be that Moldex made them. There are two straps and the straps is adjustable, but it would be unlikely that fixing them around the ears would produce a good seal – it would be just too uncomfortable to pull them tight enough. It will be interesting to see what other teams have.

Postnote: I did not see face masks in use at the Olympics or Paralypics – the Australian TV focuses on Australian athletes and there was also little close up footage of spectators.
