While supermarkets like Woolworths and Coles try to limit people in stores, an obvious thing is to allow and encourage 24 hour trading. Ditto Bunnings and other essential stores.
Making more checkouts available would also reduce queues and crowding.
If this is accompanied by on-line and store signs showing shopping numbers hour by hour, then shoppers would be able to time their shopping to shop when it is less busy.
For customers in higher risk categories shopping at 4am may be a worthwhile choice – in addition to the prescribed hours some shops offer.
Subsidising this change may be a good use of taxpayers money. It affects all of us and would give extra jobs.
