For a face mask to give any protection, it should be the right type. In Australia, all P2 masks have the P2 and Australian Standard stamp on them. In the US it is N95. All the disposable P2 masks I know of have two straps that go around the head – not just the ears, have a properly engineered seal to the face (particularly the nose), and have the manufacturers brand and model number on them.
Almost all the face masks I see in pictures relating to the Wuhan coronavirus have no branding, do not appear to fit well and do not have straps around the head.
